What Is Tata Motors?

So, who owns Jaguar? The answer is the Mumbai-based Tata Motors, which is the automotive segment of the larger Tata Group. Tata Group is one of the leading conglomerates in India, contributing to a wide range of industries ranging from hospitality to telecommunications. How did the Tata Group come to own Jaguar?

  • Tata Group started in 1868 as a well-known trading company with achievements like creating India’s first hydro powerplant and establishing the Indian Institution of Science in 1911.
  • Tata Group began investing in multiple commercial and passenger vehicle companies, and the Tata Motors offshoot became fully devoted to expanding automotive manufacturing.
  • Tata Motors purchased both Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008, and the two became known as Jaguar Land Rover Limited in 2013.

Who Owned Jaguar?

Jaguar’s roots began in Blackpool, England in 1922. Back then, the brand was known as Swallow Sidecar Company. This company, started by William Lyons and William Walmsley, became S.S. Cars Limited. The brand debuted models like the 1935 SS Jaguar sports sedan and the SS Jaguar 100 convertible. But, how did the Swallow Sidecar Company become the Jaguar brand you know today around South Dade?

  • The S.S. Cars Limited name paid homage to the brand’s early roots as Swallow Sidecar. They eventually rebranded to the modern and memorable “Jaguar” name.
  • The brand gained fame for its striking sports cars, including the Jaguar XK120 and Jaguar E-TYPE. Wins in the 1951 and 1953 Le Mans 24-Hour Race also secured their place in international motorsport history.
  • In 1965, Jaguar Cars joined the British Motor Holdings Limited. They soon joined with the Leyland Motor Corporation Limited to become the British Leyland Motor Corporation.
  • Jaguar became its own company again in 1984, following financial difficulties from the British Leyland Motor Corporation in 1975.
  • Ownership transferred to Ford Motors in 1999, alongside Land Rover in 2000. Tata Motors acquired both brands in 2008, and the rest is history.
